Quantum theory of incompatible observations

چکیده
Quantum theory describes events on the most fundamental level currently available. The synthesis of information from mutually incompatible quantum measurements plays the key role in testing the structure of the theory. The purpose of this Letter is to show a unique relationship between quantum theory and the mathematical statistics used to obtain optimal information from incompatible observations: Quantum theory prefers the relative entropy (maximum likelihood principle) as the proper measure for evaluation of the distance between measured data and probabilities defined by quantum theory. In the standard textbooks [1], a quantum measurement is represented by a hermitian operator Â, whose spectrum determines the possible results of the measurement

Comparison of Quantum and Bayesian Inference Models
The mathematical principles of quantum theory provide a general foundation for assigning probabilities to events. This paper examines the application of these principles to the probabilistic inference problem in which hypotheses are evaluated on the basis of a sequence of evidence (observations). The probabilistic inference problem is usually addressed using Bayesian updating rules. Here we der...
متن کاملTypes of quantum information
Quantum, in contrast to classical, information theory, allows for different incompatible types (or species) of information which cannot be combined with each other. Distinguishing these incompatible types is useful in understanding the role of the two classical bits in teleportation (or one bit in one-bit teleportation), for discussing decoherence in information-theoretic terms, and for giving ...
متن کاملQuantum Theory of Radical-Ion-Pair Recombination: A New Physical Paradigm for Low-Magnetic-Field Effects
A new paradigm emerging in the description of magnetic-sensitive radical-ion-pair recombination reactions is presented. This paradigm is founded on the realization that the recombination process of radical-ion pairs is a continuous quantum measurement. In the regime of low magnetic fields we describe the appearance of purely quantum phenomena, that fade away as the magnetic field increases. We ...
متن کاملThe Quantum Statistical Mechanical Theory of Transport Processes
A new derivation of the quantum Boltzmann transport equation for the Fermion system from the quantum time evolution equation for the wigner distribution function is presented. The method exhibits the origin of the time - irreversibility of the Boltzmann equation. In the present work, the spin dependent and indistinguishibility of particles are also considered.
متن کامل“ Nonlocal character of quantum theory ”
There has been considerable discussion of the claim by Stapp [1] that quantum theory is incompatible with locality. In this note I analyze the meaning of some of the statements used in this discussion.
